Brief Bio:

I am currently an senior undergraduate student at the University of Pittsburgh, majoring in Anthropology, with an emphasis on Archaeology, and majoring in History, with a minor in German.  In the fall, I will be starting in the Archving Program at the Pittsburgh School of Information Sciences.   My particular interests in history are WWII and worldwide genocide.  I began working on the Coroner project in January 2008.  This project has given me a realistic idea of how people lived and died in the past in a city I have lived in for most of my life! 

 

 At the end of February, I had the chance to visit the City morgue.  A friend of mine was in a class that was taking a field trip there, and since they were allowed to bring guests, she took me.  It was very interesting to see the building because it is the same building they have been using since the 1800's and I got to see different places that coorespond to places mentioned in the files we have been working with.  First, we went to the room where all the inquests were held.  It was interesting because I got to see exactly where all the different people would be sitting during an inquest, and it gave me a good mental image to take with me for when I read all the inquests.  Then we went into the room where they have the equipment to develop pictures and we even got to see a bunch that they had.  One was of a guy who jumped from one of the Schenley Park bridges, with a rope around his neck, with the intent of hanging himself.  However, the force from his jump made the rope rip through his neck and it caught on his spine, so they found him hanging, but just barely.  Then they took us to the room where they autopsies are performed, and we got to see one body that had recently been cut open.  It was weird being able to put a face to the "story" because before we went in, the teacher told us that she was an older woman, she had had a heart attack, etc.  and it was almost like reading a file, but then walking in and seeing her face made it so much more real.  Finally, our last stop was the decomp (decomposition) room, where there were 3 bodies that had been in there since 1997, and were unclaimed.  The body we saw was another woman, who died of a heart attack, but was not found immediately.  The smell of that room is something I will never be able to forget.  The womans skin was green, the top layer of her skin was coming off, it looked like a glove almost, her eyes were sunken in and pretty much gone, and her face looked leathery, almost mummified. The trip as a whole gave me a better idea of the process at the coroners office and made the files seem more real to me, not just names, ages, and small details of their death, but actual people. Working Notes:

 

1953

 One of the most interesting things I've found so far was the suicide of an ex-navy man, who was 40 years old, case 195312_131.  The interesting part of it wasn't the suicide itself, but the explination of the tattoos on his body in the coroners report.  On his left arm he had a cross that said "In memory of Father".  His left shoulder had a red rose that said "sister".  On his left forearm he had a panther and a full length female figure in a bathing suit and robe. On his right arm, he had "U.S. Navy" with an America flag, life preserver with a sinking ship that said "sailors" on it, with the number "895-99-59".  On his right forarm he had a female bust with a sailor cap and middy blouse with red flowers and also a large cocktail glass with a naked woman who was nude except for her shoes and the glass said "Man's Ruin".  The bottom of the glass had a bar of music, 3 playing cards and a revolver.  His left leg had a man with a red athletic undershirt, blue trousers, with a mop and bucket, with the name "Paul". 

 

Case 195312_175, 24 year old woman, self-inflicted abortion.  She was six months pregnant and died of uterine hemorrhaging and shock.  They never found the baby

 

1958

I am very interested in the suicides and how they progress over the time period I have been looking at.  Most recently, I've noticed a large increase in the number of suicide notes found with people, along with more women suicides.  Also, I came across my first black suicide(195807_98), which is interesting to me because I have been recording every suicide I have come across and this is the first black person to kill themself out of the ones I have found.  I also had the youngest of my suicides, a 14 year old boy, who killed himself over his girlfriend breaking up with him. (195807_143). 

Another interesting case(195810_123), was a 51 year old male who hung himself and left 5 notes, all saying pretty much the same thing.  But the interesting part was that 5 years before he shot himself in the head in a suicide attempt, and three years before he tried to kill himself by carbon monoxide poisoning.  When they found him, they also found his dog, which he had strangled and wrapped in a sheet.  In one of his notes he said that 'she', which I would assume was his wife or ex wife, could have the dog now, and that he hoped she was happy. 

A 24 year old male hung himself and left a note that said "I was going to kill her, but this way she thinks twice before she cheats on her next husband." (195809_165)

 

195008.26 On a scrap of newspaper in this file I found something I thought was funny.  It saied "Comic Dictionary: Chatterbox - A woman who would rather be wrong for an hour than be quiet for a minute."

 

 In October of 1960, a little girl was playing outside with the neighbors kids when suddenly her mother heard her screaming and when she got downstairs her daughter was engulfed in flames.  She died of 2nd and 3rd degree burns over 50% of her body.  She was buried on her 5th Birthday, and they never figured out what had happened. (196010.190)

 

In file 196010.36, the mans nationality is listed as German-Jew.  I just found that interesting.

 

I have been noticing a few files, such as 196304_74, where the cause of death is undetermined, but listed in parentheses underneath that it says Christian Science, or Scientists.  I'm not sure what that means, but will be doing some research to figure it out.

Today was the first day I worked with the new files.  They are hard to handle because they are so frail.  At the same time, the writing on them is hard to read, which makes it harder to understand how they died, when, where, etc.  Some of the names are hard to read too.  It is interesting to look at the amount of railroad deaths during the time period.  Literally, almost one in every three is someone either being struck or crushed by a train.  A few of the files even mentioned that they thought a legislation should be passed that people cannot walk on train tracks.  If it was passed, it must not have worked because a lot of people are being decapitated or their limbs are being cut off.  In every case, it is considered accidental and the train company doesn't get in trouble.  The files say that the person died of their own negligence. 

 

I have been keeping track of every suicide I come across.  I write down the case number, the persons age, sex, and how they did it.  Also, I include whether or not they left a note and I note if they are black because I have begun to notice a lack of black people who have killed themselves.

His note dealt with an affair he had been having since 1965, with a woman cashier from Gimbel's.  He discussed when she called, when he called, and when and where they went to have sex.  He even goes so far as to say "We had some good screwing."  At the end of the first page he starts going into details about the woman, her body, etc.  but the entire second page is unreadable, which sucks because it sounded like an interesting note.  I am use to getting the ones from those who have been cheated on, never from those who have done the cheating.
